I hope you find a solution and post a new firmware.

technically, i can already post a firmware image with the explorer i posted earlier. nothing new yet, except for altered kernel build with usb ethernet option.

i am still thinking on tacking some other things about it, e.g.

- usb storage mode closes the book reader app, i don't remember if that happened on official fw,
- cannot connect to wifi while reading a book (no menu option)
- some simple, lightweight calibre book server integration
- maybe goodreads api integration, but license for the api is a bit weird.
- book progress bars in explorer (that might be tricky), as it used to be in official fw.
- on-demand ftp server on the device, so you can upload books over wifi.

RE: New: 1.6-0.2.0
i've posted new build at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3873...x_explorer

changes are

- .mobi files should be scanned for basic data and visible in recent reads. those files lack info on series and series index, so explorer will try to figure out first data from .opf file if there is one. and those files will not pop up in by series view because of that.

This only happens if you rescan files, directories or entire sd card, or if book is not in database. looking into possible improvements on that.

- i am messing around with some views, "by series" should show most recently read series first, still lacking some tooltips to indicate that, but they will be out of alphabetical order in the front. this will only happen if you delete the database from your device, as i didn't mark it as important update - database is not automatically updated on startup to include this new view.

if you want to try it, make an whatever.oar script with content

Code:
#!/bin/sh
rm ~/obx_explorer.db

and run it from explorer. then reboot the device.

note that you will lose your book progress and will need to rebuild database.

- files with no metadata (e.g. txt, pdf) theoretically should pop up on recently read and in database. needs checking.

for testing you can save obx_explorer as file with .oar extension and run from your current obx_explorer.

RE: New: 1.6-0.2.0
i've not posted the build yet, but i've implemented a simple thingy : any missing metadata is copied from epub file if it's of the same name as .mobi file and in the same dir. If you keep multiple formats of the same book, at least you'll have your .mobi files in 'by series' views.

RE: New: 1.6-0.2.0
i've added a feature of displaying simple series information in series view. in recent series view there is a date of last read, total reads of books of the series and series progress (books unread / books total)

i'll post a build with db update script later.

RE: New: 1.6-0.2.0
Hi Yoshi,

First of all thank you for picking up the project!

Have you been in contact with koudijs at all or has he just abandoned the project?

I am a very pleased user of the open boox build 0.2.0 build date 20120520.

Much better than the official builds from Onyx.

Anyway my requests are similar to many other intrested users..

1: Power management.
2: Time setting.
3: Random shutdowns related to change in battery level.

I am a noob in software so unfortunately cannot help but hope you succeed in making a new build!

Thanks in advance!

RE: New: 1.6-0.2.0
Well, he doesn't really seem to respond, maybe i did not try enough or he moved on to something more interesting. I'm slowly digging through the lower level os pieces.

Afaik the time ought to set itself through wifi - there is a NTP daemon working in the background, except the timezone seems wrong.

As for battery level - i do not have random shutdowns, but there seems to be faster battery drain on openboox (or the battery is just old, or i read a lot). That's something to figure out in one way or another. I do have occasional crashes, and i have to dig through the source of the explorer app to nail it down (problems with debugging are not very helpful).

As for time setting, i'm thinking of maybe adding some time set option into the app or firmware somewhere.

Also there is a problem when you have lots of fonts - there is no scroll bar in the menu window with font selection. I'm trying to figure that piece out. It could be somewhere in the boox sdk itself.

I also prepared a script to update the boox explorer db, so you do not have to rebuild it with the next update.

For What it is worth...

Anyone looking for new Firmware should really have a serious look at this polish site:

http://onyx-ereader.pl/pl/fw-boox-60

This is an 1.7 version Firmware that functions perfect on first look.

Much more responsive than the open Boox Firmware.

Will update when more info and experience...

there are some reports on poor battery life and not shutting down.

i'll probably give it a shot too eventually. it's just that i had bad experience with 1.5 that made me switch to openboox - at some point it would take up to 3 seconds to switch pages.

edit: it does have issues with shutting down, and you can only start wifi via launching the web browser.

i'll try porting explorer on top of it, due to coolreader improvements. right now i am digging through it to see if i can get telnet working - it seems to be in firmware, just doesn't seem to work right when i start it up.

not so sure about that. Main shell app seems kind of sluggish, even though i tried various setting reset features.
