Works on: Onyx Boox 60, BeBook Neo, Wolder Boox
Version: 1.6-0.2.0
Datecode: 20120520
Download: OpenBOOX-update-1.6-0.2.0.tar.gz

Check the README.txt file within the archive before updating!

I am proud to announce that, six months after the 0.1.1 release, the 0.2.0 release is now available for download.
The full version number is 1.6-0.2.0, indicating that also the Onyx libraries and open source applications have had an update.

New features
Music player
The new music player allows background playback of mp3 and flac files, but since it uses MPD more formats can be added in the future.

This is how the player works:
- Copy your music files to the internal flash or SD card in a folder called 'music'
- Enter the Music category and select one of the scan functions from the menu
- Your music shows up in different views (favorites, artists, albums, etc) based on the metadata that's included in the files
- Add the music of your choice to the playlist (via menu or 'right' key), playback will start and you can continue your reading
- While reading you can control the playback by selecting Music from the menu or by tapping the music icon in the status bar

 03 music_player.png (Size: 13.02 KB / Downloads: 105)

Reader selection
The update of the Onyx stuff brings CoolReader to OpenBOOX.
Since CoolReader supports quite some formats there has to be a way to select your preferred reader for these different formats.

Selecting a reader is easy:
- Enter the menu and open the 'Select Reader' group
- Select the format that you want to configure and select your preferred reader from the dialog that shows up

 01 reader.png (Size: 15.65 KB / Downloads: 104)
 02 select.png (Size: 12.79 KB / Downloads: 105)

Improvements
- Removal of single/all book(s) from database
- Metadata renewal of already available books during rescan
- Comic book support (cb7, cbr, cbz)
- Zipped fb2 support (fb2.zip)
- Application termination by holding the OK button
- NTP time reception in case of Wifi connection

Notes
- The explorer and music player of the official firmware are no longer included. This is because the size of the system partition is limited and the saved space can now be used for new features.
- The database structure changed. If you update from OpenBOOX 0.1.1 then you will loose your explorer customizations and the content of your Books category (i.e. you have to scan your books again).

I would like to hear from you
You found a bug or room for improvement? You have a great idea for a new feature?
Please let me know, all input is welcome!

I'm currently finalizing the integration of CoolReader (Onyx port) in OpenBOOX.

To use CoolReader for the book formats it supports I had to find a way to make the association between the two. The Onyx explorer has one dialog that allows you to select the 'Preferred Applications' for four different book formats. This is not a very flexible solution, also because you can not use CoolReader for all the formats it supports. I solved this by adding a new group to the menu that allows you to select the preferred reader for the different formats. After selecting an extension you can configure your preferred reader in the dialog that appears.
This is how it looks:

Good morning,

first of all i would like to express my gratitude for your hard work. OpenBoox FW is simply _stunning_ I have not installed yet (i've to solve some problems with my device, before, doing some cleanup) but i'll soon.

I would like to ask you if you plan to add a feature/app: a connection/sync to goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/

This social network offers a nice set of web services API to update your library shelves, rate your books, update your book reading status ("you are on page 123 of 456 of the book...") and share on social network tons of data and streams. I actually manually update those stats, but it would be really great to have the possibility to auto-sync (on demand or on event) all those statistics when the boox device has wi-fi enabled.

what do you think? it could be a good feature?

tnx in advance!

Good morning!

I've just discovered this forum and, gosh, i'm glad to see a place to discuss and ask for a help for this great (but definitively uncommon - on the web) e-reader!

I'm planning to switch to openboox firmware since after an upgrade i saw that..all stylus and wi-fi capabilities of my device just disappeared! I don't know if i made a mistake, perhaps i upgraded with the wrong firmware. But trying to just know which model i have is a pain!

Before trying further updates, i would like to be sure about my model: which are the differences between 60/A60/A60s/A60w?

tnx in advance for any help!

my Onyx Boox 60 is dead by itself.

since some days my Boox has a strange problem of memory: don't remember the last document opened and the last page viewed for each recent book opened. (but only PDFReader and FBReader, CoolReader works ok)

Today I have discovered that don't remember also the "preferred applications" settings. And then..... the disaster. During the normal use (nevertheless I was on a train and and not knowing what to do I read an epub) the device freeze!

At home I have tryed a reset without solve the problem: the Boox rebooting and then stops it on the splashscreen. With the blue led on.

I have tryed to do an upgrade (with pressing OK and the reset at the same time) and the upgrade works (for example if I came from a Onyx firmware to a Bebook firmware the splashscreen is changed) but the stops after the complete loading of the bottom bar with the splashscreen still remains.

I think this is a problem of memory corruption (I hope that is not HARDWARE with the end of the writing-cycles of the NAND flash memory) so I am unable to resolve the problem, because I have no access to the internal memory of the boox.

Any advice is welcome

Specifically, I would like to run taskwarrior http://taskwarrior.org/projects/show/taskwarrior on my bebook. I have seen people mention something called dropbear but can't work out exactly what it is and I found this http://sourceforge.net/projects/boox-ter...=directory emulator but it is only in alpha so I'm not sure if it actually works.

Further, would there be difficulties in running other arbitrary command line programmes on the bebook?

Cheers.

PS. I don't have a bebook yet, I'm just trying to figure out if it will fit my needs (desires?) or not.

Before the forum crash there used to be a certain version of "Cocon" (Comic-conquer) hosted on these forums which worked perfectly on my Bebook Neo. I think the version hosted on these forums was altered and translated by someone to work better than the original build. For some reason the program files I have been using on my device got corrupted so I threw them away, under the impression that I could still find them here... Alas... It seems the thread has vanished since the december crash and the official google code project page for comic-conquer only hosts a version that will not run on my device...

Does anyone still have the version of comic-conquer originally hosted on these forums??

I've attached the original file from the google project page, just if someone needs it...
Is there a list of working apps for this device?

I am probably not bringing the wiki back online in writable mode, insteads opting to move all information to the forum.
The old wiki sadly nevert gained much attention and I don't want to split the little information we currently have over two areas.

You could make a howto post here.;
Just make a post and choose "howto" in the thread prefixes to get a nice [Howto] in front of your thread title. I am looking at nice ways to use these thread prefixes, for instance linking to all [Howto] posts, or linking to all posts tagged [A60]

OK, you can do it however you want to do it.

I'll continue to try to help out however you want. But it seems backwards to me, from the viewpoint of a person looking for information.

Others may have a different way of looking at it. But when I look for information on, say, a Linux OS that I'm trying out for the first time, I first look to the manual [if they have one] and then to the wiki if the manual doesn't cover the issue with which I'm having a problem. Last of all, I do a search of the distro forum, and if that fails -- I go to the effort to register and ask my question on the forum.

The way I see it, the Wiki isn't "another area" --it's the organized version of what knowledge is gained by the community.

The problem you noted --"old wiki sadly never gained much attention" -- is very common problem, if you mean that not many people wrote for it.

A lot of people are shy even about posting in a forum. But, even so, many people will do that. BUT most everybody is TOTALLY afraid to write in a wiki! I had that problem when the Mepis Linux community administration elected me to lead the project to revise their Wiki so that it would be updated and accurate for the different distro versions. Mepis is based on Debian, and the differences between "lenny" and "squeeze" make it important to users to know which Wiki pages are good for which OS version. So I didn't have to write everything myself, I'd email forum members and say something like, "That was a great post you made on how you fixed the wireless connection on your old xxxxx-chip! Can you write it up in detail for us in the Wiki, please."

People were just scared. It was like I was asking them to write the definitive biography of Jesus Christ or something! Most people [after I begged politely and flattered them] would write what i asked for --but they wanted to email it to me, and let ME be the one on record as putting it in the Wiki!

The point is: like any project that really goes anyplace, you need to have one person in charge of it, to make sure things get done. Democracy and all that is a wonderful concept, but an individual needs to be "Minister of the Wiki" if the Wiki is going to function. Even if nobody else writes in the wiki, at least s/he can copy info that is scattered in the forum posts and put it into an easy-to-access form.
